Late August is when driveways get widened, additions get staked out, and someone finally admits the spruce is standing where the garage has to go. Cutting it down takes an afternoon, and replacing thirty years of growth takes thirty years. That arithmetic is why a tree scoop keeps appearing on rural and suburban job sites across Canada.
The trouble is that relocation gets treated as a purchase of machine time. An operator arrives, the tree comes out, the tree goes in, and the invoice closes. Survival, however, is decided by a sequence that begins weeks earlier and runs for two growing seasons afterward.
The lift takes minutes and the job takes seasons
The mechanical portion of a tree scoop relocation is genuinely short. Blades close, the ball lifts, the load travels, and the tree is set. Anyone watching sees perhaps half an hour of work and reasonably concludes that half an hour is what they are buying.
Crews that move trees regularly work from a list rather than a booking. Marking, route survey, landing preparation, and aftercare each appear on it, and none of them involve the machine. Owners moving one tree once tend to arrive with the booking and nothing else.
A tree keeps a record of which side faced the sun
Bark is not uniform around a trunk. The south and west faces have spent years absorbing hard afternoon sun and have thickened and hardened in response. Bark on the shaded north face stayed comparatively thin because it never needed to be anything else.
Rotate the tree during the move and that thin bark faces full sun for the first time. The result is sunscald, splitting, and dead cambium, often appearing a season or two later. A ribbon of flagging tape tied to the north face before lifting prevents all of it.
The route between the two holes is the part nobody walks
Distance is rarely the obstacle in a yard relocation. What sits along the route is. Gate posts, fence corners, retaining walls, and the raised edge of a patio all narrow a path that looked open when it was measured on a site plan.
The load is also wider than the machine carrying it. A canopy that reads as compact while the tree stands upright spreads considerably once the trunk tilts back for transport. Walking the route with a tape and a ladder is an hour that repays itself.
Overhead clearance stops more moves than weight ever does
The vertical dimension is where relocations stall halfway. Service drops to a house, garage soffits, and the low limbs of trees being kept all sit at fixed heights. None of those heights was chosen with a loaded carrier in mind.
Measure the highest point of the load as it will actually travel, not as the tree stands now. Where an electrical drop crosses the route, the utility should be contacted rather than judged by eye. Clearance rules around service conductors are not a matter of opinion.
Soft ground turns a short haul into a recovery operation
A skid steer, a tree scoop, and a loaded soil ball together concentrate serious weight on a small footprint. Late summer ground often looks firm at the surface while staying saturated below. Irrigation zones, swales, and septic fields are the usual offenders.
An operator near Guelph crossed a septic bed on a hot afternoon. He spent the rest of that day extracting the machine instead of setting the tree. Timber mats over the soft stretch cost very little beside rutted turf and a damaged field.
Where the tree lands is settled before the machine arrives
The receiving position deserves as much attention as the tree itself. Grade should be checked so the root flare finishes at the height the tree grew at. A ball dropped into loose fill keeps settling for months after the crew has gone home.
Planting too deep is the most common way a healthy relocated tree dies slowly. Spacing is the other quiet error. Clearance should be judged against the canopy the tree will carry in twenty years, not the one arriving on the trailer today.
Support through the first winter manages movement rather than weight
Staking is widely misunderstood as a way of holding a tree upright. Its actual purpose is limiting movement of the root ball. Every time that ball rocks it shears the fine new roots trying to grow out into the surrounding soil.
Ties should therefore be loose enough to let the trunk flex, since that flexing is what builds taper and strength. They also have to come off after one or two seasons. Guys left on a thickening trunk eventually girdle the tree they were protecting.
The responsibility does not end when the machine drives away
A relocated tree has lost a large share of its absorbing roots. It must rebuild them outward from the surface of the ball, which takes two seasons. Water therefore goes onto the ball itself, deeply and at intervals, rather than over the lawn.
The first two years also mean a mulch ring rather than turf against the trunk. Fertilizer is skipped in the opening season, pruning is limited to broken wood, and the ties get inspected each spring. By the third year the roots have left the ball behind.
What to walk and mark before the blades close

Every item on that list is answered on foot, with a tape and an afternoon, before a tree scoop is scheduled. None of them adds machine hours to the quote. Each addresses a failure that appears long after the invoice has been paid.
